History of Mahidol University

• Establishment: Mahidol University traces its roots back to 1888 when the medical school, then known as the Siriraj Hospital School of Nursing, was founded by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Thailand. The medical school aimed to address the country's shortage of healthcare professionals.
• Prince Mahidol Adulyadej: In 1920, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla and the father of modern medicine in Thailand, enrolled in the medical school. His dedication to public health and medicine inspired the institution's future direction.
• Expansion and Renaming: Over the years, the institution expanded, and in 1943, it was officially renamed "University of Medical Sciences" to reflect its growth beyond a single medical school.
• Mahidol University: In 1969, the institution was further elevated and renamed "Mahidol University" in honor of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej's contributions to medicine and public health. The new name reflected the university's broader focus on various disciplines beyond medicine.
• Multidisciplinary Growth: In subsequent years, Mahidol University experienced significant expansion, establishing faculties in areas such as Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health, Social Sciences, Engineering, Science, and more. This multidisciplinary growth has contributed to the university's academic diversity and reputation.
• Research and Internationalization: Mahidol University placed a strong emphasis on research and international collaborations. It has formed partnerships with prestigious institutions worldwide, promoting knowledge exchange and research advancements.
• Global Recognition: Mahidol University has gained international recognition for its academic excellence and research output. It consistently ranks among the top universities in Thailand and Southeast Asia, and it has received numerous accolades and awards for its contributions to various fields.
   

Mahidol University engage all of our students in social and community outreach, working with local people on projects to address environmental issues and support social and economic development around campus. These activities help to build a strong community within and beyond the university, and expose students to diverse points of view. All undergraduate students receive an activities transcript which reflects their breadth of experience. We also support innovation and creativity through entrepreneurial education. Students can develop ideas through interdisciplinary project work, bringing a range of expertise and interests to the table, and can take their projects to the next level through our start-up boot camps, training days, and pitching workshops. To promote collaboration and exchange of ideas, and to support our student entrepreneurs, we have 7 co-working and maker-spaces across our campuses, with facilities to develop multimedia and interactive projects and presentations, as well as for designing innovative prototypes and establishing start-ups. 

All students need a depth of knowledge in their fields and a strong understanding of the technical details required to succeed in their chosen profession. All of our study programs are built upon this foundation of expertise, using active project based learning and practical assignments to ensure that students can implement their knowledge in real-world scenarios Interdisciplinary Curiosity We focus on work-integrated learning with local and international enterprises, to make sure that our students have the knowledge and experience which industries are looking for. All of our students take part in common core classes, exposing them to a broad range of topics and developing interdisciplinary curiosity. Many of our faculties have created multidisciplinary programs, allowing students to incorporate interests from several fields and acquire the skills to pursue careers in new industries. Our range of online MOOC and SPOC courses delivered through our MUx platform support active engagement and life-long learning, spreading knowledge and skills beyond our campuses and making sure that personal and professional development is available to anyone, anytime, anywhere.
