Abstract
This research aims to (1) develop cut points in conjunction with determining criteria for each level of English reading comprehension ability on a Wright map for elementary school students and (2) develop and validate a test measuring English reading comprehension ability for elementary school students. The sample consisted of 50 sixth-grade students from small schools under Udon Thani Primary Educational Service Area Office 1 for the academic year 2024, selected through cluster random sampling from a population of 2,215 students.
The test was developed based on a three-phase structural model: Phase 1 - Creating a progress map of English reading comprehension ability, Phase 2 - Designing items/tasks according to the structural map, and Phase 3 - Analyzing the structural model and interpretation (Measurement Model/Wright Map) using the Rasch model together with Wright Map considerations.
The research findings are as follows: (1) The structural map of students’ English reading comprehension ability consists of one dimension - Reading for Comprehension - referenced to Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) theory with 4 levels, ranging from Level 1 (unable to summarize or answer questions, the lowest level) to Level 4 (analyzing character behaviors, explaining underlying reasons, evaluating and reasoning about concepts in the reading material, the highest level). (2) The English reading comprehension test comprised 20 multiple-choice items with dichotomous scoring (0 to 1 point). (3) The quality assessment of the instrument met the standard criteria for educational and psychological testing: (1) Validity evidence showed that the assessment tool has content validity, with item difficulty covering the range of student abilities; (2) Reliability evidence showed an EAP/PV reliability of 0.794 and internal consistency reliability of 0.80; and (3) Item fit statistics analysis, considering INFIT MNSQ values from unidimensional model analysis, showed values ranging from 0.80 to 1.27, with almost all items falling within acceptable criteria.
